Saturday 30 November to 26th January, The 200 Show Exhibition in the Mosaic and Cottage Galleries. Open to view during The Arts Village opening hours Monday to Friday 9am to 4.30pm and Saturdays 10am to 4pm.


Summer Closedown, 24th December to 2nd January – Please note that The Arts Village is closed down for the holidays from closing time on Wednesday 23rd December to re-opening time of 9am on Tuesday 5th January. 


Tuesday 5th January to Saturday 30th January, Pop Up Summer Residency at The Arts Village –  The Pop Up Residency sees artists given space, time and resources to work, and the community given access to free/low-cost art-making. This years artists are:

  • Natascha Hartzuiker (Rotorua) – Photography
  • Razor Taser Laser (Moutere) – Stencil and Spray Painting
  • Smithy-James Sarah (Rotorua) – Traditional In

The residency project takes place from 5th to 31st January 2021 when artists will be at work onsite and running at least 10 hours each of community programming including workshops, demonstrations, and arts talks.  


Saturday, 9th January, Pop Up Summer Residency Opening Talks, 10.30am-11.30am, Join us at The Art Village and meet this season’s resident artists for the Pop Up Summer Residency.. Pecha kucha presentations about each of the artists’ projects and arts practice followed by refreshments. Free event. This years artists are:

Thursday 12th January, 10am-12pm, Basics of Ink Workshops – Learn the basics of ink and ink drawing with Smithy. In this workshop, he will show you basic techniques and overcome the jitters of doing the first inkstroke. This workshop will exercise the use of line weight applied with brushes and pens to create form. Open Drawing Sessions, 10am-1pm; Friday, 15th January; Saturday 23rd January, Wednesday, 27th January – Join this open drawing session with our resident artist, Smithy. It’s free to come along, and materials will be provided (you can BYO materials if you like). This is a cool opportunity to draw whatever you like and make art alongside our resident artist and kōrero about art and his mahi. Wednesday 13th January, 10am-12pm, Ensō Workshop – Discover this Japanese art form and discover how this ink technique can facilitate self-expression and meditation. This workshop will also exercise your self-expression, creativity, and will be a space to create. Wednesdays 13th and 20th January, 10am-11am, Stencil and Spray Workshop for Teens (Ages 13-17) – Make and spray your own stencils with an experienced street artist. Learn basic can control and how to make stencil art. Saturdays, 16th and 23rd January, 10am-3pm Take a Pinhole Photograph Workshop – Learn how to take photos using a pin-hole camera and how to develop them from the negatives. In this workshop, Natascha will instruct you how photographs are taken using pin-hole cameras and how its inner workings produce photos. Saturday 30th January, 10.30am to 12pm, Celebrating the Summer – Artist Residency Showcase. Nau mai, haere mai – we invite you to join us at 10.30am on Saturday 30th January to attend the artist showcase from the 2021 Pop Up Summer Residency. This is a free event, open to all, and we would love to have you along. Over January, three artists have run projects in shared studio space, working on their arts practice, and connecting with our community and the public. The showcase event is a chance to share some aroha, support, and learn from our three amazing resident artists:

  • Natascha Hartzuiker (Rotorua) – Photography
  • Razor Taser Laser (Moutere) – Stencil and Spray Painting
  • Smithy-James Sarah (Rotorua) – Traditional Ink

This project is supported with funding from Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust, Rotorua Arts Village Trust, and Creative Communities Scheme Rotorua.

Tuesday 2nd February, 3pm – APPLICATIONS CLOSE FOR ART IN THE PARK.

Sunday 21st February, 10am to 4pm, Art in the Park – Rotorua’s iconic free family-friendly arts market event with lots of art stalls, live music, a free kids activity and some choice coffee (plus yum food just onsite and at The Arts Village Cafe). Set in the idyllic Government Gardens this event is one not to be missed and a great day out!
