Open Studios Project 2019/2020 Workshops

Amanda Echevarria – Mixed Media (Philippines)

Monday 16th December to Monday 13th January 2020, Create Sculptural Lamps with Amanda Echavarria – Make sculptural lamps using PVC pipes and other upcycled materials. Learn how to use power tools and broaden your creative skill arsenal. Empower yourself and address those debilitating negative self-talk through this project. Learn, create, and be empowered. Participants must be aged 16 and over and able to use and operate power tools.  Limited spaces, the cost of this workshop is free through the Open Studios Project. 

There are two time slots available for this class and you must be able to attend all six classes in the same time slot to register (participants will register for either all mornings, or all six afternoons).

Christine O’Donnell – Painter (Auckland)

Weekends from 4th January to 19th January, 2020, Weekend Workshops Walking Experience and Studio Art Sessions – For the lovers of walking and art. Join Christine O’Donnell for a walk around Rotorua environs and a studio art session reflecting on the spirit and story of the place. Participants must register for both days of the weekend. No age restriction for family groups. If unaccompanied by an adult, participants must be 14 and up. Limited spaces, the cost of this workshop is free through the Open Studios Project.

Claire Delaney – Illustrator and Storyteller (Rotorua)

Tuesdays 7th January, 10am – 4pm,  Whimsical Wonders Workshop with Claire Delaney – Come and learn to create your own characters in this character development workshop using pen and ink. Participants will learn how to draw whimsical characters and paint them in watercolor. For ages 8 and up. Tuesday 14th January, 10am – 4pm, Imaginative Storytelling Workshop with Claire – This is a fun day of imaginative exercises to release the inner writer. Playing with words through a series of techniques that could result in poems, short stories, or children’s books. For ages 8 and up. Tuesday 17th December, 4pm – 7pm, Knitted Rag Rugs Essentials with Gayle Heath – Learn how to create knitted rag rugs, cushions, bags, and more with Gayle Heath. There will be plenty of recycled garments available to share, but participants may bring their own cloth / clothing to be reused if they wish to work in a particular colour scheme. Thursday 19th December, 4pm – 6pm, Woven Coasters with Gayle Heath – Reuse and upcycle used clothing and textile and learn how to create woven coasters with Gayle Heath. Free registration. Friday 3rd January, 4pm – 7pm, Sewn Rag Rug or Cushions with Gayle Heath – Reuse and upcycle used clothing and textile and learn how to create rug cushions out of rags with Gayle Heath. Thursday 9th January, 4pm – 6pm, T-Shirt Bags with Gayle Heath – Reuse and upcycle used T-shirts and turn them into customisable bags with Gayle Heath. Free registration. Thursday 16th January, 4pm – 7pm, Nature’s Vessels with Gayle Heath – Create and sew vessels out of natural materials. Finish this workshop with a basket of your creation that can be made from natural materials and other embellishments. Free registration. Participants may bring their embellishments like yarns, ribbons. Open to ages 14 years plus and must have basic hand sewing skills.
