Holiday Arts Academy at The Arts Village

The Arts Village Holiday Arts Academy is an arts-based holiday programme in Rotorua that runs during the April/July/October school holidays each year. Our next programme will be held in April 2019.

Our programme has a focus on quality arts education taught by practicing artists and is for 8 to 12 year olds who love getting creative. We offer a full day 9am to 3pm programme with a 1:10 teaching ratio and amazing local tutors.

Please note: Unfortunately we do not have a programme for 5-7 year olds in the April Holidays however we will be offering 5 days for 5-7 year olds in both the July and October holidays.

  • MONDAY 15 APRIL
    Drawing: Messy Mark Making
    Learn to sketch and scribble with pencil and charcoal. Experience messy mark-making using ink and dye. Create your own artworks using a variety of creative drawing techniques like shading and hatching lines, to blending and blurring colours using pastels and chalk.
  • TUESDAY 16  APRIL
    Sculpture: Outer Space Galaxy Adventure
    Come and create some out of this world space-like sculptures. Learn to make planets from another galaxy, build space ships, aliens and astronauts. Let your creative mind go wild with various building and sculpting techniques. Come and join in our outer space galaxy adventure.

    Painting: Vibrant Kiwiana Pop Art
    We will be creating some vibrant kiwiana pop art paintings. We will learn to mix and match vibrant paint colours. We will create a large vibrant pop art painting inspired by Andy Warhol techniques and kiwiana designs.
  • THURSDAY 18 APRIL
    Abstract Art: Kids Cubism
    Calling all young Picassos! Join us in on our kids cubism day. Learn to distort reality by looking through the eyes of abstract artists of the past. Learn how to draw cubism pencil sketches. Create interesting abstract self portraits and express yourself with fun experimental abstract painting techniques.

  • TUESDAY 23 APRIL
    Construction: Will it fly? Will it float?
    Come and build, break, test and construct for a day of learning and lots of fun. We will be creating towers and bridges we will test whose construction is the tallest and strongest. We will have heaps of challenges from the egg drop test to a balloon powered race. All young engineers will build and test a plane a boat or vehicle of their choice for the final race!

    Toi Māori: Traditional vs Modern Māori Art
    Learn the history and be inspired by traditional Māori art. Create your own Koru & Kowhaiwhai patterns and design your very own Tukutuku panel. Then travel into the future and express yourself using modern Māori art techniques, be inspired by modern Māori artist’s.

    Drama: Dazzling Drama Day
    Calling all amazing young performers! This is your chance to take part in our Dazzling Drama day. Learn exciting acting techniques have fun with various vocal warm ups. Then get inspired by real actors at the Blue Bath’s performance of “Messy Magic Adventure” before coming back to the studio to prepare and perform your own mashed up version of classic childhood stories with a modern twist. A day to have fun and express yourself in dramatic ways!
